Maple is of the family Aceraceae, genus Acer. There are approximately 128 species with all but one native to the northern hemisphere. The word Acer is is derived from the Latin word meaning sharp – a reference to the sharp points on the maple leaf. Most maples are trees growing 30-145 ft in height although there are smaller shrubs. The maple leaf is on the coat of arms of Canada and on the Canadian flag. Maple has a variety of uses from bowling pins, pool cues and baseball bats to string and woodwind musical instruments. Maple is considered a tonewood (a wood that carries sound waves well) and is used in numerous musical instruments. The back, sides, and neck of most violins, violas, cellos, and double basses are made from maple. Maple has a long history of use and is actually referred to by Chaucer as “mapul” in The Canterbury Tales from the 14th century.
Maples are also important as a source of syrup and wood. The dried wood is often used for the smoking of food, and charcoal from maples is an integral part of the Lincoln County process used to make Tennessee Whiskey.

Roger Abney –
Ordered his & her for my brother and sister-in-law; one with maple inlay, the other with padauk inlay (made for a lefty). They were both very impressed and complimentary of the workmanship.
